Cardinal Gibbons to consecrate New Altars of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church

Whilst doing some research in historical newspapers today, I came across an article in the Baltimore Sun of Saturday, September 3, 1898. The surnames found in this article include: Connor, O’Hara, Padian, Cockey, Mulcahy, McDermott, Bussey, Lindsay, Rodgers, Kenourly, Flavin, Connolly, Fitzgerald, Shea, Ryan, Kennedy, Kelly, Bradley, Hanley, Scally, Doyle, Maguire, Martin, Noppenburger, Hyland, Kenney, O’Connor, and Moore.  In addition to Cardinal Gibbons, priests mentioned were Frs Campbell, McKenny, Murray, Dougherty, Donahue, Lenaghan, and Thomas.st-josephs-dedicates-new-altar-1898

  1. My wife, Tenby, nee Galloway, Ihde, is related to Dr. John Galloway who had an office as a physician in Ellengowan in 1863 and whose office is shown on an 1877 map at intersection of Galloway Ave. and York Turnpike. I have seen the photos posted on the friendsoftexasmaryland.org site and we would like to come visit so that we could see them in person. Is this possible? We live about two hours away in VA.

    1. Steven, many of those buildings in the photos are gone now, however, the Historical Society of Baltimore County is located in the old Almshouse, which is atop the hill above where Dr. Galloway’s office sat and holds many more photos in their collection. Much of my collection is also housed there. I am not certain, but I believe that Dr. Galloway’s office was in one of the two buildings pictured here. https://cassiekt.files.wordpress.com/2014/06/wisewilliams-photo.jpg

  2. My Great Grandfather William Patrick Costello was born in April of 1870 in Texas Maryland.

His Father Joseph and mother Ellen Costello immigrated there from Ireland.

He had a brother Thomas, a sister Ann, Mary, and another brother James, who were also born there.

They moved to Detroit, then onto Buffalo, NY.

    1. Some of the Costellos came from the townlands near Strokestown in Roscommon, and some may have been from Ballykilcline in particular. Do you know from where in Ireland Joseph & Ellen Costello emigrated?

  3. Do you have any I for.ation on the Philip and Margaret Kennedy from Texas, Maryland? They were my 4th great grandparents and I am having trouble finding many records on them. They were married before 1853.

    Thank you,
    Kristen Gatt

    1. I have several newspaper articles that reference Philip and Margaret:

The St. Joseph’s Church Jubilee Book published in 1927 listed Philip Kennedy, Martin Kennedy, and Patrick Kennedy all as members of the parish, but does not list their relationships.

  4. From what I got from my mother Dolores Kennedy:

My grandfather, Francis Martin Kennedy, was born into a family of the quarry Irish in Texas Maryland.

His father was Peter Henry Kennedy and his mother was Margaret Elwood. On the 1898 map of Texas in the Baltimore archives you can just about make out the Elwood house on Church Lane and the Kennedy place in what is now the lot next to Lowes.

Peter Henry and Margaret had about 6 children; Francis Martin, Catherine Missouri, Nellie, Elwood, Thomas and Peter.

Peter Henry’s father was Martin (from Ireland- let’s number him 1) who married Sarah Ellen Rafferty from Carrol County. They had about 6 children; Peter Henry, Mary, Ann, Kate, Thomas and Martin(2).

Just for fun: Martin’s (1) son Martin(2) married Mary Anne Kenney and of course they had a son Martin(3). They also recycled a few names like Francis, Mary, Anne, and tossed in Sally, John, Claire and Irving!

Peter Henry’s uncle (Martin 1) had a brother Peter. Martin and Peter came to Baltimore in the mid 1800’s. Peter had a tavern, Martin went in to the quarry business.

    1. Tate, I have plenty of info on the Martin Kennedy-Mary Anne Kenney line from a descendant named John Kennedy (my fifth cousin). I am related to them through Mary Ann Kenney’s grandmother, Mary Covahey Kenney, who was the sister of my great-great-great grandmother, Jane Covahey Scally, both from Strokestown, Roscommon, Ireland. My day job is in the way at the moment, will share more later.
